Although some wood manufacturers offer a variety of wood species, at Newport Panels, we are best at working with soft maple so we have decided to focus our talent, energy and expertise at becoming even better at using this type of wood. By doing this, we will offer you the highest quality maple products.

Maple trees

Maple trees are generalized under a common name, but there are well over 100 individual species located in various parts of the world.

Soft maple
At Newport Panels, maple is our specialty; we use North American soft maple, either red maple or silver maple. In the lumber industry, red maple and silver maple are considered soft maples.

Maple is a gorgeous wood and is easier to machine than many other species which, in turn, contributes to the beauty, precision and the detail of your finished project. Maple sands beautifully and offers a clean, smooth finish with a tight grain, ideal for any high end application.

Only the highest quality maple boards are used when manufacturing your wood products.

Red maple (Acer rubrum)
The red maple is also known as scarlet maple, soft maple, Carolina red maple, Drummond red maple or water maple.

The Red maple is one of the most widespread deciduous trees in eastern North America.
At maturity, the red maple often reaches heights of approximately 15 m (50 ft). It is appropriately named since its flowers, petioles, twigs and seeds are all varying degrees of red. The red maple is usually recognized for its radiant deep crimson foliage in the fall.

Silver maple (Acer saccharinum)
The silver maple is also known as creek maple, river maple, soft maple, water maple or white maple.

The Silver maple is a deciduous tree which is native to eastern North America, mostly found in the east of the United States and adjacent parts of southeast Canada.
The silver maple is a rather fast-growing tree. At maturity, it can reach heights ranging from 15 to 25 m (50 to 80 ft). It is one of the most widespread trees in the United States.

Uses of soft maple
Soft maple is used, among other products, for manufacturing furniture, kitchen cabinets, paneling, mouldings, stair treads and spindles.

Kiln drying
At Newport Panels all our lumber is kiln dried and stored in humidity controlled warehouses. Kiln dried soft maple adds to its worth as the drying process increases the wood’s bending strength, crushing strength, stiffness and resistance.
